European Hornet Nest Building Activity

The European hornet excise small strips of bark from trees or shrubs such as Nellie R. Stevens Holly and Viburnum.  The hornets do not strip all the bark off the plant so as to not cause girdling and death on the first attack.  Subsequent attacks may remove enough bark and cambium to cause the branch or trunk above the wound to die.
