Freeze Damage is Very Pronounced This Winter!
It has been quite some time since we have had not only this level of freeze damage but also this severity. Many different plants are affected. The main cause is not just the cold temperatures but also the accompanying winds that cause leaf dessication and the subsequent burn. The good news is that, due to the adequate winter rain levels, in most cases, the plants will recover.
Be sure not to jump the gun and prune before we are past last frost. It doesn't harm the plants to knock off the dead leaves but do not prune them yet. Pruning too early will cause them to initiate new growth which could be killed again by late frosts. Here are some examples of what we are seeing.
