Common plant problems in the Atlanta area
PESTS & PROBLEMS
Atlanta’s growing season provides plants with almost year around growth. Because of this long growing season pest populations can build to thresholds where plant damage can occur. The natural and man-manipulated environment in Atlanta can also cause stress and eventual decline in our landscapes and forests. The following is a list of some of the more common pests, cultural problems and environmental problems we may encounter year to year.

Rhizoctonia blight

Brown Patch appears, usually in fescue, as brown blotches scattered through the turf. It can also develop in warm season turf as it breaks dormanct.  It is associated with a variety of conditions which may include any or all conditions such as: high nitrogen levels, high humidity and temperatures and improper watering techniques.

Dollar spot appears as small silver dollar size blotches, usually in warm season turf. The key word here is blotches. Very seldom do we see the distinct spots caused by dollar spot fungus that are common on golf greens. The presence of dollar spot can indicate compaction problems, too much thatch, or is simply an indicator that available nutrient levels are dropping and should be replenished. This year this disease will be very active due to the weather being conducive to disease development.
