but may also be initiated by physical damage from rodent chewing or mechanical damge from weed eaters or lawn mowers.  The wounds can become infected with fungal or bacterial agents which result in necrosis of the branch or stem and possibly death.

The best cure for this problem is to prevent the original injury and use plants that are less suseceptible to stem canker organisms.
