Girdling roots develop when a newly planted tree or shrub is not properly prepared for planting. It is especially common on those plants that are root bound in their planting container or have been growing in restricted conditions in the nursery or field.
The roots begin to grow in a circular pattern which eventually strangles the plant or causes deterioration on the restricted side of the plant.
