Green up slow on some turf, especially Zoysias

If dealing with zoysia the first point to understand is, zoysia is not necessarily “late” to green up even if it is “behind” the bermuda and even other zoysia.  Full green up of zoysia should not be expected until late May or Early June.  Factors such as scalping to low prior to green up can delay recovery and green up.  Low soil temperatures lingering into late May can slow green up.  Excessive thatch can also slow green up.  Inadequate irrigation can slow green up.

By raking or power detatching excessive thatch can easily be removed.  One must simply wait for soil temperatures to rise into the 70’s. Scalping of zoysia should not be as severe as is done to bermuda.  Take off only the brown top and do not scuff the turf.
