In soils with high levels of sodium you can get these beneficial effects. Our soils in and around Atlanta are not high in sodium so the gypsum is virtually useless in changing any of the characteristics of the soil.  In high sodium soils the gypsum reacts with the sodium.  Without the sodium there is little or no reaction.  Also gypsum does not change the pH significantly.  Consequently, if you need to raise your pH then use pelletized dolomitic limestone.
